Well Child Visits
Well child visits are scheduled check-ups from birth through age 21 that track growth and development, deliver vaccines on schedule, screen for vision, hearing and mental health, and give you time to ask about anything.
About well child visits
Well visits follow the American Academy of Pediatrics Bright Futures schedule: 3–5 days, 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24 and 30 months, then once a year from age 3 through 21.
What we check at every visit
- Growth: height, weight, head circumference in infants, BMI from age 2
- Development and milestones, with standardized screenings at 9, 18 and 30 months
- Vaccines due at that age (see our immunization schedule)
- Vision and hearing screening at the recommended ages
- Nutrition, sleep, screen time, safety and school
- Emotional and behavioral health, with depression screening yearly from age 12
Made for the whole child
Because behavioral health and nutrition are part of our practice, a concern that surfaces at a well visit does not become a referral into the unknown. We can start the conversation, and often the care, the same day.
When to come in
- It has been more than a year since your child’s last check-up
- School, camp or sports needs a physical form
- You have questions about growth, eating, sleep, behavior or mood
- Vaccines are due or you are not sure what your child has had
What to expect at the visit
Bring any school or sports forms, your questions, and a list of medications. Visits take 20 to 40 minutes depending on age. Teens spend part of the visit alone with the provider, which is normal and confidential within the limits we explain to both of you.
Insurance and cost
One well visit per year (more for infants) is covered as preventive care at no cost by most plans under the Affordable Care Act. Physical forms are completed at the visit.
Need help outside office hours?
When the office is closed, call the main number, (770) 615-7000. After hours the call goes to our after-hours line for urgent concerns. Use the patient portal for anything that can wait until the next business day. In an emergency, call 911.
Questions parents ask
Can a well visit and a sick visit happen on the same day?
Often yes. If your child is unwell on the day of a check-up we will address it, though some vaccines may be postponed and insurers may bill the sick portion separately.
Do you complete school and daycare forms?
Yes. Bring the form to the visit and we will complete it while you are here. Georgia Form 3300 (hearing, vision, dental and nutrition) and Form 3231 (immunizations) are routine for us.
